EL Phyu

L Phyu, a well-known songwriter and bass guitarist with the alternative band the Ants, died of lung disease on May 27, said his friends last week.

The 33-year-old musician had been receiving treatment for a week in Bahosi Clinic in Lanmadaw township. Shortly after his death last Thursday he was cremated at Htein Bin cemetery in Hlaing Tharyar township.

L Phyu moved to Yangon from Taunggyi in 1994. That year he began studies at Yangon Institute of Economics as well as entered the Yangon music industry.

In his second year at university, he gave up studies to focus on his talents as a songwriter.

In 1997 L Phyu organised an alternative band with his friends from Taunggyi – Maung Maung Zaw Latt as lead guitarist and songwriter and Aung Khat as drummer. Their debut album, Yaung Sone Chocolate (Colourful chocolate), was released in 1998 and became a hit.

The band is known as a pioneer in the alternative music scene in Yangon.

Their second album, Hnan Kaung Lay Yae Nway U Pong Pyin (Spring story for a grasshopper), was released in 2003. He died while arranging the band’s third album.

L Phyu started singing and playing bass guitar with the Ants in 2002. He has written rock songs for famous singers such as Lay Phyu, Zaw Win Htut, Bo Bo, Doe Lone and Tinzar Maw. He wrote original, modern rock songs for Lay Phyu’s latest album Leik Pyar (Butterfly), which was released in early 2003.

L Phyu had written more than 400 songs, including original and copy songs and theme songs for videos.

When he died, he left his wife, Thae Nay, and one child.
